Cruise Port Walking Guides

A cruise port day is a different problem from a city break. You have six or eight hours, a hard deadline, and a choice between a $120 excursion and working it out yourself.

These 59 guides answer the question the cruise lines are vague about: what can you actually reach on foot from the pier, and what genuinely needs transport. Several of the most-visited "ports" are industrial berths an hour from the city they are sold as — Civitavecchia is 80 km from Rome, Le Havre is 200 km from Paris — and each guide says so plainly, then says what is worth doing instead.

Tell it how many hours you have ashore and it fits the route to them.

The Mediterranean and Adriatic

Northern Europe and the Baltic

Alaska, the Pacific and beyond

Why walk a port instead of booking an excursion?

Cost

A ship excursion runs $80–150 a head. Walking costs nothing, and a pass covering unlimited routes for 24 hours is $6.95.

Pace

No coach, no group of forty, no waiting in a car park. You stop as long as you like and skip what does not interest you.

Time

Excursions build in a lot of transit and a shopping stop. On foot, the whole window is yours.

Honesty

Some ports genuinely need transport, and these guides say which. Walking is not always the right answer.

Not on the list?

Routes are generated for anywhere in the world, so a small port with no guide here works the same way — name it, say how long you are ashore, and the route is planned to fit.
