Gdańsk is worth the train. Its Main Town was flattened in 1945 and rebuilt facade by facade from paintings and photographs, so what looks like an intact Hanseatic merchant city is in fact a meticulous reconstruction — and the story of why is the story of twentieth-century Poland. Solidarity began in the shipyard here in 1980, and the museum on that site is one of the best in Europe.

What to see on foot in Gdynia

Długi Targ and the Main Town

Rebuilt from paintings after 1945. Neptune's Fountain and the merchant houses are reconstructions so careful the seams are hard to find.

European Solidarity Centre

On the shipyard site where the 1980 strikes began. A rust-steel building that tells how a trade union brought down a government.

St Mary's Church

One of the largest brick churches in the world, holding around 25,000 people. 400 steps up the tower.

The Crane

A medieval port crane on the Motława, once able to lift four tonnes using treadwheels worked by men walking inside them.

Gdynia's modernist centre

A whole city built in the 1920s and 30s in streamlined modernism, plus two museum ships on the waterfront.

Planning the day

Take the SKM train to Gdańsk Główny, walk the Royal Way through the Main Town, then the Solidarity Centre. That is a full day. Gdynia's modernism is the fallback if trains or time are against you.

What to watch out for

The SKM is cheap and frequent but validate your ticket. Poland uses the złoty, not the euro. Gdańsk is a 35-minute ride each way.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Gdynia port day

How do you get to Gdańsk from Gdynia cruise port?

The SKM commuter train from Gdynia Główna takes about 35 minutes to Gdańsk Główny and runs every ten to fifteen minutes. It is inexpensive and much better value than a coach transfer.

Is Gdańsk old town genuine or rebuilt?

Rebuilt. It was around 90% destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed facade by facade from paintings, drawings and photographs — which is itself the reason to go and see it.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
