Le Havre Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?
Le Havre is sold as Paris. Paris is 200 kilometres away — a two-and-a-quarter-hour coach each way, or four and a half hours of a twelve-hour port call spent on a motorway.
- Can you walk it?
- Partly walkable — the town yes, Paris absolutely not
- Where ships dock
- Pointe de Floride, about 2 km from the centre.
- Pier to town
- 25 minutes on foot, or a shuttle.
- Typical time ashore
- Typically 7am–7pm, and Paris will consume all of it.
- Sold as the gateway to
- Paris — read the walk-or-travel note below before you book anything.
That leaves perhaps five hours in Paris, most of which goes on one museum and a coach park. Meanwhile Le Havre itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site — not for being old, but for being new: the city was 80% destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt entirely in reinforced concrete by Auguste Perret, and it is the only twentieth-century European city centre on the list. Honfleur, the postcard harbour town, is 30 minutes away rather than 135.

What to see on foot in Le Havre
St Joseph's Church
A 107-metre concrete lantern tower by Perret, with 12,768 pieces of coloured glass. It works as a memorial to the 5,000 killed in the bombing.
The Perret show flat
A reconstructed 1950s apartment in the rebuilt city, showing what was radical about it — fitted kitchens, central heating, light on both sides.
MuMa
The Musée d'art moderne André Malraux holds the second-largest Impressionist collection in France after the Orsay. Monet painted Impression, Sunrise in this harbour.
Les Jardins Suspendus
Hanging gardens in a nineteenth-century fort above the city, with the whole Seine estuary in view.
Honfleur
The half-timbered harbour across the estuary that Monet and Boudin painted — 30 minutes by road, and a far better fit for a port day than Paris.
Planning the day
Be honest with yourself about Paris. If you have never seen it and will not return, take the transfer and accept a rushed five hours. Otherwise: Honfleur in the morning and Le Havre's concrete modernism in the afternoon is a genuinely interesting day that no one else on your ship will have had.
What to watch out for
Independent trains to Paris take about 2h15 each way from Le Havre station and the last returns are tight against all-aboard. Missing the ship here means catching it in Southampton.
All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Le Havre port day
Is it worth going to Paris from Le Havre on a cruise?
Only if you have never been. It is 200 km, about 2h15 each way by coach or train, so a twelve-hour call gives roughly five hours in the city — enough for one area or one museum, not for Paris.
What can you do in Le Havre itself?
The rebuilt city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site — Auguste Perret's concrete reconstruction after 1944, including St Joseph's lantern tower. MuMa has the second-best Impressionist collection in France, and Honfleur is 30 minutes away.
What is a self-guided walking tour?
A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.
How long are the tours?
You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.
Does it work offline?
You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
