Frequently Asked Questions

If something here is not answered, the shortest way to find out is usually to build a tour — it takes about a minute.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How is this different from a guided walking tour?

A guided tour runs to someone else's schedule and someone else's route, and it covers what the guide covers. This builds the route around the time you actually have, the pace you want to walk at and the things you said you were interested in — and it will wait as long as you like at any stop.

Do I need to download an app?

No. It runs in your phone's browser. There is nothing to install, nothing to update, and nothing taking up space after the trip.

Which cities do you cover?

Any city, town or region in the world. Routes are generated for wherever you are standing or whatever place you name, rather than picked from a fixed catalogue — so small towns and neighbourhoods work as well as capitals.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Can I do a driving tour instead of walking?

Yes. Walking, running, cycling, driving and wheelchair-accessible routing are all supported, and each uses routing built for that mode — a driving tour follows roads and sensible parking, a walking tour uses paths and crossings.

Is there a wheelchair-accessible option?

Yes, and it is genuinely different rather than a walking route relabelled. Accessible routes are planned with a wheelchair costing that avoids steps and kerbs and prefers smooth surfaces, and you can additionally ask to avoid steep hills, uneven surfaces or busy roads.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.

Can a group do the same tour together?

Yes. One person buys a pass and plans the tour, then shares a code; up to ten people including the host can join for free. The host moves the group from stop to stop and everyone's phone follows, each playing its own audio.

What does it cost?

A 24-hour pass is $6.95 and a 7-day pass is $12.95, both for unlimited tours in that window. Joining somebody else's tour is free.

What languages is the narration in?

Narration is currently in English, spoken by a natural-sounding synthetic voice. You can also choose text only, audio only, or both together.

How accurate are the routes?

Stop locations are checked against an independent geocoder rather than trusted as generated, and the walking line between stops comes from a pedestrian routing engine — so the route follows real paths and crossings rather than a straight line on the map. The commentary itself is written by a language model, which means it is usually good and occasionally wrong — check anything you are relying on.

Does a pass renew automatically?

No. A pass runs for its window and stops. There is no subscription, no recurring charge and nothing to cancel — you will never be billed again unless you deliberately buy another pass.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Email info@customwalkingtours.com within 14 days of buying a pass and we will refund it in full, no reason needed. If something failed outright — you were charged and no pass appeared, or narration never worked — we will refund it whenever you notice.

What do you do with my location and my data?

Your location is used while the page is open to place your start, draw the route and know when you have reached a stop; no location history is stored. There is no analytics, no advertising and no tracking on the site, and card details never reach us — Stripe handles those. The privacy policy sets out every service involved and what each one receives.

City guides

Each guide covers the landmarks, three routes worth walking, terrain and surfaces, the best time of year, and whether driving is worth it there.
