Self-Guided Walking Tours in Washington, D.C.

Washington was designed on paper in 1791 by Pierre L'Enfant as a grid with diagonal avenues cut across it, which produces both grand sightlines and a great many confusing five-way intersections.

The National Mall is far longer than photographs suggest — nearly 3 kilometres from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, with the Washington Monument roughly halfway. People routinely plan a morning for it and spend six hours. Knowing the real distances, and that all the Smithsonian museums along it are free, is most of what a good route here does.

Takes about a minute. Washington, D.C. is already filled in — choose your time, pace and interests and the route is planned around them.

What to build a Washington, D.C. walking tour around

The Lincoln Memorial

Thirty-six columns for the states at Lincoln's death. King spoke from the steps in 1963, and the spot is marked in the stone.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Maya Lin designed it at 21, as a class project that got a B. The names are in the order they died, and the wall points at the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

The Capitol

The dome is cast iron, not stone, and was completed during the Civil War on Lincoln's insistence that the work should visibly continue.

The Smithsonian museums

Nineteen museums, all free, most of them strung along the Mall. Air and Space and Natural History are the busiest by a wide margin.

Georgetown and the C&O Canal

Older than the capital that surrounds it. The canal towpath runs 300 km from here to Cumberland, Maryland.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture

The bronze lattice references ironwork made by enslaved craftsmen in Charleston and New Orleans. The history galleries start underground and rise.

Three routes worth walking in Washington, D.C.

The Mall, west end

Washington Monument to Lincoln, taking in the Second World War, Korean, Vietnam and Martin Luther King Jr memorials — about 3 km and best at dusk when they are lit.

Capitol Hill and the east Mall

The Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building, and Eastern Market, away from the tourist density.

Georgetown and the waterfront

The canal towpath, the M Street houses, the Exorcist steps and along the Potomac to the Kennedy Center.

Practical notes for walking Washington, D.C.

Terrain and surfaces
Flat on the Mall, with real hills up to Georgetown and Adams Morgan. The Mall itself is gravel and grass, exposed, with very little shade — brutal in July.
Best time to walk
Late March to April for the cherry blossom, and October. Summer is hot, humid and unshaded on the Mall.
Driving here
The diagonal avenues and traffic circles are confusing and parking is difficult. Drive out to Mount Vernon, Great Falls or the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah.
Size
Washington, D.C., District of Columbia, United States — population about 680,000.

Questions about walking Washington, D.C.

How long is the National Mall to walk?

Capitol to Lincoln Memorial is about 3 km one way — roughly 40 minutes without stopping, and a full day with the museums. The apparent shortness is an optical illusion caused by the scale of the buildings.

Are the Washington museums really free?

All nineteen Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo are free with no ticket, though a few — the African American History museum in particular — use free timed passes that need booking ahead.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How is this different from a guided walking tour?

A guided tour runs to someone else's schedule and someone else's route, and it covers what the guide covers. This builds the route around the time you actually have, the pace you want to walk at and the things you said you were interested in — and it will wait as long as you like at any stop.

Can I do a driving tour instead of walking?

Yes. Walking, running, cycling, driving and wheelchair-accessible routing are all supported, and each uses routing built for that mode — a driving tour follows roads and sensible parking, a walking tour uses paths and crossings.
