Self-Guided Walking Tours in Budapest

Budapest was two cities until 1873 — hilly, royal Buda on the west bank and flat, commercial Pest on the east — and the Danube between them is 300 metres wide.

The split is the structure of any good route here. Buda is the castle, the views and the climbing; Pest is the boulevards, the ruin bars, the market and the parliament. You need both, and the bridges are the joints. Chain Bridge at night, with the castle lit above and parliament opposite, is the single best free thing in the city.

Build a Budapest tour

Takes about a minute. Budapest is already filled in — choose your time, pace and interests and the route is planned around them.

What to build a Budapest walking tour around

The Hungarian Parliament

The third-largest parliament building in the world, with 691 rooms and precisely 96 metres of height — a reference to the year 896.

Fisherman's Bastion

Seven towers for the seven Magyar tribes, built 1902 as a viewing terrace rather than a fortification. It has never defended anything.

The Chain Bridge

The first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest, opened 1849. Before it, crossing in winter meant waiting for the ice.

Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Fed by a spring 1,246 metres down at 77°C. Eighteen pools, and the outdoor chess players are there year-round, including in snow.

The Great Synagogue on Dohány Street

The largest in Europe, seating about 3,000, with a memorial garden that is also a cemetery — unusual for a synagogue, and a consequence of the ghetto.

The ruin bars of District VII

Abandoned buildings in the old Jewish quarter, occupied from 2002 onward and furnished with whatever was to hand. Szimpla Kert was the first.

Three routes worth walking in Budapest

Castle Hill and the Buda side

The funicular up, Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion and the walk along the castle walls, down through the Víziváros back to the river.

Pest boulevards

Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, Andrássy Avenue to Heroes' Square, with the Great Market Hall and the Jewish quarter on the way back.

Baths and City Park

Széchenyi, Vajdahunyad Castle and the park, reached along Andrássy on the oldest underground line in continental Europe.

Practical notes for walking Budapest

Terrain and surfaces
Pest is flat. Buda is a hill, with a funicular and buses to the top. Some Buda pavements are steep and cobbled; Pest's are wide and easy.
Best time to walk
April to June and September to October. The baths are best in winter, when the steam rises off the outdoor pools.
Driving here
Drivable but not necessary. Worth it for the Danube Bend — Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom — as a half-day loop.
Size
Budapest, Central Hungary, Hungary — population about 1.7 million.

Neighbourhoods worth a route of their own

Not just walking

The same route planner covers Budapest on foot, at a run, by bike, by car and with wheelchair-accessible routing that avoids steps and kerbs rather than simply relabelling the walking route. Pick the way you are getting around and the stops, distances and timings are planned for it.

Questions about walking Budapest

Buda or Pest — which side should a walking tour start on?

Start in Pest and cross to Buda in the late afternoon. The castle views face east, so the light is behind you in the morning and on the city in the evening.

Is Budapest cheap to visit on foot?

It is among the best value of any European capital. Most of the great sights — the bridges, the boulevards, the bastion terraces, the parks — cost nothing at all.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How is this different from a guided walking tour?

A guided tour runs to someone else's schedule and someone else's route, and it covers what the guide covers. This builds the route around the time you actually have, the pace you want to walk at and the things you said you were interested in — and it will wait as long as you like at any stop.

Can I do a driving tour instead of walking?

Yes. Walking, running, cycling, driving and wheelchair-accessible routing are all supported, and each uses routing built for that mode — a driving tour follows roads and sensible parking, a walking tour uses paths and crossings.
