Self-Guided Walking Tours in Prague
Prague came through the twentieth century with its historic core almost entirely intact, which is rare in central Europe and the reason the whole centre is a single UNESCO site.
The city is Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and art nouveau on the same street, often in the same building, because nothing was ever knocked down to start again. The classic route — Old Town to Charles Bridge to the Castle — climbs steadily and covers about 4 km, and the payoff is that you see the layers in sequence rather than as a jumble.
Takes about a minute. Prague is already filled in — choose your time, pace and interests and the route is planned around them.
What to build a Prague walking tour around
Charles Bridge
Begun in 1357, reputedly at 5:31am on 9 July, a palindrome of odd numbers chosen by the king's astrologers. It carried traffic until 1965.
Prague Castle
The largest ancient castle complex in the world by area — about 70,000 square metres. It is a district, not a building.
The Astronomical Clock
Running since 1410. The dial shows Old Bohemian time, Babylonian time, the zodiac and the position of the sun and moon, all at once.
The Jewish Quarter (Josefov)
Six synagogues and a cemetery with roughly 12,000 visible stones and perhaps 100,000 burials, layered twelve deep because the ghetto could not expand.
Vyšehrad
The other castle, on the other hill, with almost none of the crowds and a cemetery holding Dvořák and Smetana.
Petřín Hill
A funicular, a mirror maze, and a 63-metre observation tower built for an 1891 exhibition in open imitation of the Eiffel Tower.
Three routes worth walking in Prague
The Royal Route
The coronation path: Powder Tower, Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, up through Malá Strana to the Castle. Walk it early — the bridge is nearly empty before 8am.
Josefov and the Old Town
The synagogues, the old cemetery and the art nouveau streets built over the cleared ghetto, which is a harder and more honest story than the guidebooks give it.
Vyšehrad and the river
The quieter fortress, the national cemetery, and the walk back along the Vltava embankment with the whole castle skyline opposite.
Practical notes for walking Prague
- Terrain and surfaces
- The Old Town is flat; everything on the west bank climbs. Malá Strana to the Castle is a sustained ascent on cobbles, with stairs on the direct routes and a tram alternative.
- Best time to walk
- May, June and September. Winter is cold, dark and genuinely beautiful, particularly the Christmas markets.
- Driving here
- The centre is largely pedestrianised and parking is difficult. Drive out instead — Kutná Hora, Karlštejn, Český Krumlov, all within two hours.
- Size
- Prague, Bohemia, Czechia — population about 1.3 million.
Neighbourhoods worth a route of their own
Not just walking
The same route planner covers Prague on foot, at a run, by bike, by car and with wheelchair-accessible routing that avoids steps and kerbs rather than simply relabelling the walking route. Pick the way you are getting around and the stops, distances and timings are planned for it.

Questions about walking Prague
When is Charles Bridge not crowded?
Before about 7:30am and after 10pm. In between it is shoulder to shoulder for most of the year, and a route timed around that is a different bridge entirely.
Is Prague hard to walk?
Moderately. The old cobbles are uneven, and the castle side is a real climb. The Old Town, Josefov and the riverbank are flat, and trams 22 and 23 take the hill out of the castle route.
What is a self-guided walking tour?
A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.
How is this different from a guided walking tour?
A guided tour runs to someone else's schedule and someone else's route, and it covers what the guide covers. This builds the route around the time you actually have, the pace you want to walk at and the things you said you were interested in — and it will wait as long as you like at any stop.
Can I do a driving tour instead of walking?
Yes. Walking, running, cycling, driving and wheelchair-accessible routing are all supported, and each uses routing built for that mode — a driving tour follows roads and sensible parking, a walking tour uses paths and crossings.
