Self-Guided Walking Tours in Kraków
Kraków's old town is ringed by the Planty — a park laid out on the line of the demolished medieval walls, which makes a complete 4-kilometre green loop around the historic centre.
The city was left almost undamaged in the Second World War, so the medieval street plan of 1257 is intact, with the largest medieval market square in Europe at the middle of it. That square is the organising fact: everything in the old town is within a few minutes of it, and the Planty ring around the edge tells you exactly when you have left.
Takes about a minute. Kraków is already filled in — choose your time, pace and interests and the route is planned around them.
What to build a Kraków walking tour around
The Main Market Square
About 200 metres on each side, laid out in 1257 and still the largest medieval square in Europe. The Cloth Hall down the middle has traded for 700 years.
St Mary's Basilica
A trumpet call sounds from the tower every hour and breaks off mid-note, marking a trumpeter shot in the throat during a thirteenth-century raid.
Wawel Castle and Cathedral
The coronation and burial place of Polish monarchs, on a limestone hill above the Vistula, with a dragon's den in the rock beneath.
Kazimierz
A separate town until 1800 and the centre of Jewish Kraków for 500 years. Seven surviving synagogues stand within a few streets.
The Planty
A park laid on the demolished city walls in the 1820s, forming a 4 km green ring around the entire old town.
Schindler's Factory
The enamelware works in Podgórze, now a museum about the occupation of the city rather than only the film.
Three routes worth walking in Kraków
The Royal Road
The coronation route from the Barbican down Floriańska, across the Market Square and along Grodzka to Wawel — about 2 km, and the spine of the old town.
Kazimierz and Podgórze
The synagogues and squares of the Jewish quarter, over the footbridge to the ghetto site, Plac Bohaterów Getta and Schindler's Factory.
The Planty ring
The full 4 km green loop with the Barbican, the surviving wall fragment and each of the old town's gates in turn.
Practical notes for walking Kraków
- Terrain and surfaces
- Flat except for Wawel hill, which is a gentle ramp. The Market Square and the Planty are smooth; some old town streets are cobbled.
- Best time to walk
- May, June and September. December for the Christmas market in the square, which is one of Europe's better ones.
- Driving here
- The old town is largely pedestrian. Driving matters for Auschwitz-Birkenau (about 90 minutes) and the Wieliczka salt mine (30 minutes).
- Size
- Kraków, Lesser Poland, Poland — population about 800,000.
Neighbourhoods worth a route of their own
Not just walking
The same route planner covers Kraków on foot, at a run, by bike, by car and with wheelchair-accessible routing that avoids steps and kerbs rather than simply relabelling the walking route. Pick the way you are getting around and the stops, distances and timings are planned for it.

Questions about walking Kraków
How long do you need in Kraków's old town?
A full day covers the Market Square, the Royal Road and Wawel comfortably. Kazimierz needs its own half-day, and Auschwitz is a separate full day.
Is Kraków walkable in winter?
Yes, though it is cold — regularly below freezing from December to February. The old town is compact enough that you are never far from somewhere warm, which is more than can be said for most winter cities.
What is a self-guided walking tour?
A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.
How is this different from a guided walking tour?
A guided tour runs to someone else's schedule and someone else's route, and it covers what the guide covers. This builds the route around the time you actually have, the pace you want to walk at and the things you said you were interested in — and it will wait as long as you like at any stop.
Can I do a driving tour instead of walking?
Yes. Walking, running, cycling, driving and wheelchair-accessible routing are all supported, and each uses routing built for that mode — a driving tour follows roads and sensible parking, a walking tour uses paths and crossings.
