Charlotte Amalie Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?
St. Thomas sells itself on duty-free shopping, which is a shame, because Charlotte Amalie is one of the oldest and most interesting towns in the Caribbean and almost nobody walks up its hills.
- Can you walk it?
- Partly walkable — partly — the pier is 2 km from town
- Where ships dock
- Havensight (most ships) or Crown Bay.
- Pier to town
- Havensight to downtown is about 2 km along the waterfront — 25 minutes flat, or a $4 shared taxi.
- Typical time ashore
- Typically 8am–5pm.
The waterfront walk from Havensight into town is flat, safe and pretty. What most passengers never do is climb the step streets behind Main Street — the 99 Steps, built with ballast brick from Danish sailing ships, lead to Blackbeard's Castle and a view over the whole harbour. It is fifteen minutes of climbing away from a street packed with jewellery shops.

What to see on foot in Charlotte Amalie
The 99 Steps
Built in the mid-1700s from bricks carried as ship ballast from Denmark. There are actually 103 of them.
Blackbeard's Castle
A 1679 Danish watchtower on the hill. The pirate connection is almost certainly invented, and the view is not.
St. Thomas Synagogue
The second-oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere, 1833, with a sand floor — a tradition recalling the silenced footsteps of hidden worship in Inquisition Spain.
Emancipation Garden
Where the 1848 abolition of slavery in the Danish West Indies was proclaimed, after enslaved people on St. Croix forced the issue.
Frenchtown
A fishing village founded by settlers from St. Barthélemy, fifteen minutes west of downtown, where locals actually eat.
Planning the day
Walk the waterfront into town, climb the 99 Steps early while it is cool, come down through the synagogue and Emancipation Garden, then out to Frenchtown for lunch. Magens Bay is a taxi, not a walk.
What to watch out for
The hills are steep and the humidity is high. Main Street is wall-to-wall people when four ships are in. Prices are in US dollars and US phone plans work, which surprises people.
All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.
Questions about the Charlotte Amalie port day
Can you walk from Havensight to downtown Charlotte Amalie?
Yes, about 2 km along a flat waterfront path, roughly 25 minutes. Shared taxis run it for a few dollars, and the walk is genuinely pleasant in the morning.
Can you walk to a beach in St. Thomas?
Not really — Magens Bay and Sapphire are both taxi rides over the ridge. There is a small beach at Frenchman's Bay near Havensight, but St. Thomas is a port where the town beats the beach if you are on foot.
What is a self-guided walking tour?
A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.
How long are the tours?
You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.
Does it work offline?
You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
