Philipsburg Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?

Philipsburg is built on a sand spit two streets wide between a lagoon and the sea, so the beach is not near the town — the town is on the beach.

Can you walk it?
Yes — walkable from the ship — yes
Where ships dock
A. C. Wathey Pier, about 1.5 km from town.
Pier to town
20 minutes along the harbour, or a $1 water taxi that runs continuously.
Typical time ashore
Typically 8am–5pm.

Front Street is the shops, Back Street is the locals, and Great Bay Beach runs the entire length of both. You can walk off the ship, be swimming in twenty-five minutes, and never take a taxi. Sint Maarten is also the smallest landmass in the world divided between two nations, and the French side is a bus ride rather than a walk.

What to see on foot in Philipsburg

Great Bay Beach and the boardwalk

A 1.2 km strip of sand with the boardwalk running its length, directly in front of the town. Chairs cost, the sand does not.

Front Street

Duty-free and jewellery, but also guavaberry liqueur, which is genuinely local and genuinely good.

Sint Maarten Museum

Small and cheap, covering the Arawak, the salt trade that built the town, and Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Fort Amsterdam

The oldest Dutch fort in the Caribbean, 1631, on the headland west of town — a 30-minute walk with the best view of the bay.

Planning the day

Water taxi in, walk Front Street, then spend the middle of the day on Great Bay Beach — it is directly behind the shops. If you want a walk instead, Fort Amsterdam on the western point is quiet and takes about an hour round trip.

What to watch out for

Maho Beach, where aircraft land over the sand, is on the other side of the island — that is a bus or taxi, not a walk. The island is still visibly rebuilding from Irma in places.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Philipsburg port day

Can you walk to the beach in Philipsburg?

The beach is the town. Great Bay Beach runs directly behind Front Street, so it is a two-minute walk from anywhere in Philipsburg and about 20 minutes from the cruise pier.

Can you walk to Maho Beach from the cruise port?

No — Maho is about 12 km away near the airport, on the other side of the island. That one genuinely needs a bus, taxi or tour.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
