Cartagena Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?

Cartagena's old town is 11 kilometres of Spanish colonial walls around a grid of balconied houses in ochre, coral and lime, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Can you walk it?
Yes — walkable from the ship — yes, after a taxi from the port
Where ships dock
Sociedad Portuaria, about 4 km from the walled city.
Pier to town
15 minutes by taxi; walking out of the port area is not recommended.
Typical time ashore
Typically 8am–5pm.

This was the fortified treasure port of the Spanish Main — where silver from Peru was gathered before the Atlantic crossing — and it was attacked so often that the walls took two centuries to finish. Inside them, the old city is compact, flat and entirely walkable, and Getsemaní next door is where the street art and the evening life are. The taxi from the port is short and necessary; after that, no transport at all.

What to see on foot in Cartagena

The city walls

About 11 km of fortification, built over roughly 200 years after repeated sackings — including Francis Drake's in 1586, which cost the city a colossal ransom.

Plaza Santo Domingo

The oldest church in the city and a Botero sculpture, Gertrudis, whose bronze is polished bright where everyone touches it.

Getsemaní

Outside the walls: umbrella-covered lanes, street art and the Plaza de la Trinidad, which fills every evening.

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

The largest Spanish fort in the Americas, with tunnels designed to amplify the sound of approaching footsteps.

Las Bóvedas

Twenty-three vaulted storerooms built into the walls, later dungeons, now craft shops.

Planning the day

Taxi to the Torre del Reloj, walk the walls, then the old city grid, then Getsemaní. That is four hours on foot and covers everything. Add San Felipe if you want the fort, which is a short taxi.

What to watch out for

It is hot and humid year-round with little shade inside the walls. Street vendors are persistent. Agree taxi fares before getting in, and do not walk out of the port area.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Cartagena port day

Is Cartagena old town walkable from the cruise port?

The old town itself is completely walkable, but the port is about 4 km away and walking out of it is not advised. Take a taxi to the Torre del Reloj, then walk everything from there.

How long do you need in the walled city?

Three to four hours covers the walls, the main plazas and Getsemaní comfortably. It is about 1.5 km across and flat, so distance is not the constraint — heat is.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
