Livorno Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?

Livorno is sold as Florence. Florence is 90 kilometres away, and Pisa is 20 — so the port day is really a transport decision made before you dock.

Can you walk it?
Partly walkable — the town yes, Florence no
Where ships dock
Porto di Livorno, an industrial port with a shuttle to Piazza del Municipio.
Pier to town
Shuttle to the town centre; the port itself is not walkable.
Typical time ashore
Typically 7am–7pm.
Sold as the gateway to
Florence and Pisa — read the walk-or-travel note below before you book anything.

Florence by train is about 90 minutes each way from Livorno Centrale, which leaves roughly four hours in the city. That is enough for the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio and one museum if you have pre-booked. Pisa is 20 minutes and much easier. And Livorno itself — which almost nobody sees — is a canal city built by the Medici as a free port open to Jews, Muslims and Protestants when that was extraordinary, with a quarter called Venezia Nuova that looks the part.

What to see on foot in Livorno

Venezia Nuova

A canal quarter dug in the 1600s by Venetian engineers, with bridges, warehouses and boat tours — in the town everyone skips.

Fortezza Vecchia

The old fortress on the waterfront, built 1521 over a Pisan tower, with Roman foundations under that.

Mercato Centrale

One of the largest covered markets in Europe, from 1894, and entirely unbothered by tourism.

The Terrazza Mascagni

A seafront terrace of black-and-white chequered paving, about 2 km south along the coast. Locals walk it every evening.

Pisa's Campo dei Miracoli

Twenty minutes by train and a 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale — much the easier of the two famous options.

Planning the day

Florence needs a committed, pre-booked, straight-there-and-back day. Pisa is a comfortable half-day with time to spare. Staying in Livorno gets you canals, a fortress, the best market in Tuscany and a cacciucco fish stew — for the price of a shuttle ticket.

What to watch out for

Trains to Florence require a change at Pisa Centrale in many cases. Validate regional tickets before boarding or you will be fined. The port shuttle is the only way out of the port area.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Livorno port day

How far is Florence from Livorno cruise port?

About 90 km, roughly 90 minutes each way by train including the shuttle and the walk to the station. That leaves about four hours in Florence from a typical port call.

Should you do Florence or Pisa from Livorno?

Pisa if you want a relaxed day — 20 minutes by train and the tower is a short walk from the station. Florence if you accept spending three hours in transit for one dense, pre-booked area of the city.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
