Flåm Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?
Flåm is a hamlet of about 350 people at the end of a 17-kilometre arm of the Sognefjord, and it exists on itineraries because of one railway line.
- Can you walk it?
- Yes — walkable from the ship — yes for the valley, and the railway is the point
- Where ships dock
- Flåm pier, in the middle of the hamlet.
- Pier to town
- The village is the pier — around 350 residents.
- Typical time ashore
- Typically 8am–5pm.
The Flåm Railway climbs 866 metres in 20 kilometres on adhesion alone — no rack — with a gradient of 1 in 18 for much of it, through 20 tunnels, 18 of them dug by hand. It is routinely called one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world and takes about an hour each way. Beyond that, the valley floor has a flat riverside walk and a cycle route down from the top station, which is the better option if you would rather move than sit.
Tell it how many hours you have ashore and it plans a route that fits — Flåm is already filled in.
What to see on foot in Flåm
The Flåm Railway
866 metres of climb in 20 km, no rack railway, 20 tunnels — 18 dug by hand. It stops at Kjosfossen waterfall for photographs.
Rallarvegen
The old navvies' road from Myrdal down to Flåm. Hire a bike at the top station and freewheel the 20 km back down.
Otternes farmstead
A cluster of 27 preserved timber farm buildings above the fjord, some from the 1700s, about 4 km from the village.
The Flåmsdalen valley walk
A flat riverside path up the valley from the village — the free option, and quiet within ten minutes.
Stegastein viewpoint
A platform cantilevered 30 metres out over the fjord, 650 metres up. Bus or taxi.
Planning the day
Book the railway in advance — it sells out when ships are in. Ride up, then either ride back or hire a bike at Myrdal and come down the Rallarvegen. If you skip the train, the valley walk and Otternes make a good, free three hours.
What to watch out for
The railway is expensive and sells out. The village has almost nothing in it besides the station and a few shops. Weather in the fjords changes fast.
All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.
Questions about the Flåm port day
Is the Flåm Railway worth it?
For most people yes — 866 metres of climb in 20 km through hand-dug tunnels, with a waterfall stop. Book ahead; it sells out when cruise ships are in port.
What can you do in Flåm for free?
The Flåmsdalen valley path along the river is flat, quiet and starts at the pier, and the walk up to the Otternes farmstead gives you eighteenth-century timber buildings and a fjord view.
What is a self-guided walking tour?
A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.
How long are the tours?
You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.
Does it work offline?
You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
