Akureyri Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?

Akureyri sits 60 kilometres from the Arctic Circle at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, and has traffic lights with red hearts instead of circles.

Can you walk it?
Yes — walkable from the ship — yes
Where ships dock
Oddeyrarbryggja, about 10 minutes from the centre.
Pier to town
A ten-minute walk.
Typical time ashore
Typically 8am–5pm.

It is Iceland's second city with 19,000 people, which makes it a town by most standards and entirely walkable. The botanical garden grows plants that have no business surviving this far north; the church was designed by the same architect as Reykjavík's Hallgrímskirkja. Goðafoss waterfall is 35 minutes away and Lake Mývatn about an hour — both bus trips, both genuinely spectacular.

What to see on foot in Akureyri

Akureyrarkirkja

By Guðjón Samúelsson, who also designed Hallgrímskirkja. Up 102 steps from the main street, with a window from Coventry Cathedral.

The heart-shaped traffic lights

Introduced after the 2008 financial crash as a small public morale measure. They are still there.

Akureyri Botanical Garden

Founded 1912, growing around 7,000 species this close to the Arctic Circle. Free.

Goðafoss

The waterfall of the gods, where the lawspeaker threw his pagan idols in around AD 1000 on Iceland's conversion. 35 minutes by road.

Lake Mývatn

Pseudocraters, lava formations and geothermal baths about an hour away — the northern equivalent of the Golden Circle.

Planning the day

The town, the church steps and the botanical garden make an easy and pleasant two or three hours on foot. Add Goðafoss by bus if you want a waterfall without committing the whole day, or Mývatn if you do.

What to watch out for

Weather changes fast and the fjord funnels wind. Everything in Iceland is expensive. Whale-watching from here is good but takes three hours.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Akureyri port day

Is Akureyri walkable from the cruise ship?

Yes — about ten minutes from the pier to the main street, and the whole town including the botanical garden is walkable in a couple of hours.

What is worth leaving Akureyri for?

Goðafoss waterfall at 35 minutes is the efficient choice. Lake Mývatn at an hour each way is more spectacular but takes most of the port call.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
