Grand Turk Cruise Port: What Can You Walk To?

Almost everyone off a ship in Grand Turk spends the day inside the cruise centre, a few hundred metres of beach, pool and shops built for exactly that purpose.

Can you walk it?
Yes — walkable from the ship — yes, if you are willing to leave the compound
Where ships dock
Grand Turk Cruise Center, at the south end of the island.
Pier to town
Cockburn Town is about 3 km north — 40 minutes on foot, or a $8 taxi.
Typical time ashore
Typically 8am–4:30pm.

The beach at the pier is genuinely excellent, so this is not a swindle. But the island has about 4,000 residents and Cockburn Town, 3 km north, is a small, faded, salt-trade capital with Bermudian architecture, donkeys wandering the street and a lighthouse — and it is very nearly empty of visitors. That walk is the whole argument for a route here.

What to see on foot in Grand Turk

Cockburn Town

Front Street's Bermudian-style buildings and salt-house ruins, from when Grand Turk's economy was raked sea salt.

Turks and Caicos National Museum

Holds the remains of a wreck from the early 1500s, one of the oldest European ships found in the Americas.

Grand Turk Lighthouse

Cast in Britain in 1852, shipped out in pieces, at the island's northern tip — a long, hot, empty walk with a good view.

The wild donkeys and horses

Descendants of salt-industry animals, left to roam when the trade collapsed. They have right of way.

The cruise centre beach

Genuinely one of the better beaches attached to a pier anywhere, with a reef wall dropping off close to shore.

Planning the day

Walk north into Cockburn Town in the morning — 40 minutes each way, flat, with almost no shade — see the museum and Front Street, then come back and use the pier beach in the afternoon. Or take a taxi one way and walk the other.

What to watch out for

There is no shade on the coast road and no shops between the pier and town. Carry water. The island is tiny and everything closes early.

All-aboard is not the departure time. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes earlier, and a ship waits only for its own excursions. Plan any route to be back at the pier with an hour in hand.

Questions about the Grand Turk port day

Is there anything to do in Grand Turk besides the cruise centre?

Cockburn Town, 3 km north, is a genuine 18th-century salt-trade capital with a good small museum and almost no crowds. Very few passengers make the walk, which is precisely the appeal.

Can you walk to Cockburn Town from the Grand Turk cruise pier?

Yes — roughly 3 km and 40 minutes each way along a flat coast road, with no shade and no facilities on the way. Fine in the morning, hard work at midday.

What is a self-guided walking tour?

A route you walk on your own schedule, with the commentary delivered to your phone instead of by a guide. There is no meeting point and no group — you start when you want, stop as long as you like at anything that interests you, and skip anything that does not.

How long are the tours?

You choose: 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, or three and more. The route is planned to fit the time, including how long you say you want to spend at each stop.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to plan the tour and to stream the narration for each stop. Once a stop's audio has played it is cached by your browser, but plan for having data where you are walking.
